Finding a balance between "waaa I am a slave to romance" songs and "Isis Astarte Diana fractal Mother Earth" songs in female-voiced metal is difficult.
The first category includes most of Evanescence's songs - they're not metal, as they don't have enough guitar [King of Heroes, do you?], but they do sing about failed relationships. Can't think of any other offenders by name, but about half of the tracks on Beautiful Voices were of this sort.
The second category includes Inkubus Sukkubus and a song called "Mother Nature" by Luca Turilli, in a genre I've called "pretentious goth metal wankery". It can be done well, of course, but only as satire. Otherwise, it comes across as "wow I am so deep and singing to th m'n (sic.) and Wicca-ier than thou".
"But
bouteillebleu," you may ask, "if you don't like whiny romance or pretentious wankery in your music, what on earth do you like?"
What do I like? I like things that sound like fantastical or very strange stories. A non-metal example is "Virgin State of Mind" by K's Choice; a metal example is "Out of the Great Book of Fairytales" by Naio Ssaion, or "Nemo" by Nightwish (yes, I attach Nightwish songs to other things I fangirl, shutup).
I also like songs that don't take themselves too seriously. I can't think of any metal examples here, but a non-metal example is "Mujer Florero" by Ella Baila Sola.
In conclusion, I'm going back to Nightwish and finding songs that remind me of KH2. Such as the *whole damn Century Child album*. ^_^
(And now I'm thinking "King of Heroes, do you have enough sitars?" and what the hell Demyx as Gilgamesh is such a stupid idea. But funny. "I am /too/ the King of Heroes! Don't be so mean.")
